The Dorchester Hotel has recently completed its most extensive refurbishment in almost four decades, a phased transformation that has reimagined both public areas and guest accommodation while the hotel remained fully operational.

Public spaces such as the Promenade, Vesper Bar, lobby and reception were redesigned by an exceptional team of designers including Pierre-Yves Rochon, Martin Brudnizki, Reardon Smith Architects and Robert Angell Design International. At the same time, guest rooms across eight floors were upgraded with new interiors and modernised building services, bringing the hotel up to today’s expectations of comfort and performance without losing its historic character.

Amid this backdrop, Aura Fire was responsible for the fire protection design, ensuring that safety was built into the very fabric of the refurbishment. Our work began with early audits and a detailed Recommendations Report before progressing through design development and specifications at RIBA Stages 2 and 3. As the project advanced, we supported the tender process, providing analysis and guidance to secure best value for the client.

Once contractors were appointed, we continued to play a central role, reviewing drawings and calculations, carrying out site inspections and approvals, and overseeing the installation, testing and final handover of systems. Every stage of our work was aligned with BS EN 12845, BS 9990, FM Global and FIA standards, ensuring compliance and resilience.

While the design and construction teams brought new life to The Dorchester’s interiors, Aura Fire’s contribution was to make sure that behind the scenes the hotel is protected by modern, robust and future-ready fire safety systems. The result is a landmark London hotel whose heritage has been carefully preserved while its safety has been comprehensively strengthened.
